How Much Hair Do I Need for Tape-in Extensions?

Usually, about 40 tape-in pairs are needed for a full-head extension and around 20 pairs for hair thickening.

How are tape-in extensions applied?

As already mentioned, tape-in extensions are a cold hair extension method. The application involves using special adhesive tapes, onto which the hair extensions are attached. The hair wefts are selected to match the client’s natural hair color and type.

Step-by-step process for applying tape-in extensions:

In the tape-in method, the tapes are applied no closer than 1 cm from the scalp. Each hair weft is secured using two tape strips—one placed underneath the section of natural hair, and the other on top—so that the natural hair is sandwiched between the adhesive layers. This ensures a strong and lasting hold. The extensions stay in place within the tapes even as your natural hair grows.

The standard thickness of the tape is 1 mm, and the length is 4 cm. Thanks to their compact size, the attachment points remain discreet and nearly invisible.

The lifespan of tape-in extensions is relatively short. They need to be removed and reinstalled every 2–3 months. If your natural hair grows quickly, maintenance is recommended every 1.5–2 months.

Step-by-step maintenance process:

  • Washing the natural hair with a deep-cleansing shampoo

  • Cleaning the wefts and applying new adhesive tape

  • Reinstalling the extensions

  • Trimming and styling

The same hair extensions are reused during maintenance. If necessary, the hair can be colored or trimmed. The high-quality Slavic extensions can typically be reused up to 8 times—lasting approximately 1.5 years. After the tapes are removed, no residue or damage is left on your natural hair.

  • Brush your hair daily using a soft-bristle or extension brush, starting from the ends and working upward.

  • Avoid heat styling tools directly on the tapes – use them on low to medium heat and keep them away from the roots.

  • Braid your hair or tie it in a loose ponytail while sleeping to prevent tangling.

  • Do not go to bed with wet hair – always dry your hair first.
